The promise of this book is a way to notice what you do when they go quiet, and one different thing to try each time. Not ten things. One.

From the book, how to use this book

Here’s what I know about your partner: nothing. I haven’t met them. Anything I told you about why they go quiet would be a guess with good manners.

From the book, unit 1

A question you can’t answer keeps you looking at the phone. A question you can answer sends you to the page.

From the book, unit 2

The silence

You’ve gone back over their last message, and the one before it, looking for the sentence where it changed. You’ve got a theory for why they’ve gone quiet, and then another, and by midnight you’ve got a dozen. Not one of them is information. Guessing isn’t knowing.

That isn’t a flaw in you. It’s what a head does with a gap: it fills it. Then you react to what you filled it with, and the person on the other end of the quiet hasn’t said any of it.

The silence is the part you can’t control. What you do while it’s going on is the part you can. This book is about that second part.

What this book does

You don’t have to read it front to back before it helps. Open it when the silence starts. It shows you what to do, and it gives you one different thing to try each time.

It won’t work out what they’re thinking. Nobody can do that from where you’re standing, and this book doesn’t pretend to.

A message arrives.

A three-page section you can use on its own, the day a message comes after a long silence.

What’s inside

1. What’s going on when they go quiet. What you can know from the gap, and what you can’t.

2. Does it mean they don’t love you? The question everyone asks first, and why the silence can’t answer it.

3. What you do when you reach for them. Your side of the gap.

4. Know, guess, need: the first ten minutes. Sorting what you know from what you’re guessing and what you need.

5. Asking for a time, not an explanation. How to ask for a time to talk.

6. What’s yours and what’s theirs. Where your part stops.

7. Your side of the table: what you need. Saying it plainly.

8. Staying, leaving, or not deciding yet. The choice stays yours. The book doesn’t make it for you.

A message arrives. Three pages you can use on their own.

9. When it isn’t safe. Where this book stops and who to call.

10. One different thing: your next two weeks.

Who it’s for

Your partner goes quiet or pulls away, and you want to work on your own side of the silence. You’re still in the relationship, or you’re not sure about it. It’s for any partner, whatever your gender or theirs.

Who it isn’t for

If you’re afraid of your partner, or you’re thinking about hurting yourself, this book can’t help with that. In Australia, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732. The support page at the back of the book also lists services for the United States and the United Kingdom, checked October 2026.

It also isn’t for you if you want to win someone back, or you want to work out whether your partner is “an avoidant”. It does neither.

It won’t tell you whether to stay or leave. It won’t diagnose you or your partner. It won’t promise they’ll come back, change, or tell you what they feel.
